Behind the
Architecture is the History
You are facing the last
defensive corner tower, which protected the walled town of Sarlat in the
Middle Ages. The town, well-fortified by its consuls, resisted the English
assaults until 1360. In the 16th century, the wars of religion tore through
Périgord, and Sarlat suffered attacks from the Knight of Vivans
and the Viscount of Turenne. These attacks failed, held off by the Couleuvrines
posted on the ramparts (hence the name of the hotel).
Interesting
things:
A pre-roman virgin with child
still decorates the summit of the covered way accessible from the third
floor of the hotel. It presumably recalls the attack on the convent on
the outskirts of Boucarie by the Huguenots. You may be told the story
of the decapitation and death of its profaner by a blast of harquebus,
the ancient firearm, from the tower.
You may also eat and dream before the monumental fireplace in the 13th
century hall, which was the meeting place for the Town Consuls.
A splendid fronting of medieval bays,
still to be restored, is visible from the town centre enclosure..
You
can enjoy the special atmosphere
of these historic places as guest of the hotel of Couleuvrine. Nothing
predisposed these buildings, listed as historic monuments with ruined
and complex architecture, to become a place for a holiday. The environment
has been saved, restored and adapted by the architect Serge Lebon, who
is the host.
"The Couleuvrine"
is a long cannon used from the 15th to 17th century throughout Europe.
The Couleuvriniers were equipped with this weapon.
